Thank you. But let's get right to it. We have the the ספר. A new thing today.
Today we're going to be learning, we're going into the דאווענען on Friday night, not just the זמירות, but דאווענען also, רע"ג. This actually happens to be one of my favorite pieces of the תפילה of of שבת. מגן אבות בדברו, מחיה מתים במאמרו. Very, very, very special words.
We all sing it together and then in in the מנהג by us we we the חזן repeats it afterwards, but which we only say this on Friday night. So if we only say these words on Friday night, then it means there's an ענין על דרך העבודה that we have to extract from these words that are שייך to שבת. Even though these words are beautiful words that are שייך to every day, but the whole thing is מקדש השבת ומברך השביעי, ומניח בקדושה. Who else? Just me? No, most of us.
Most of us, okay. I've been having fun the last few, I'm throwing out these references every שיעור. I don't know what it is. I'm trying to get a feel of of the soundtracks of the of our of our נשמות.
And sometimes they're, sometimes they're shocking. But this one, I mean, most of us grew up on, on אברמל, right? אברהם פריד sings that one. When it's not too late in the wint, when in the winter שבת-es sometimes when it's not too late and we haven't דאווענט for already three and a half hours, we'll sing it on Friday nights in שול too.
חבר'ה, who doesn't want to feel like they're, they're feeling resurrected from the dead? So today, what we're going to see from from ר' בידרמן, very beautiful, very beautiful and a strong כוונה for an עבודה, an עבודה למעשה that I know every one of us is either waiting for it to happen to them or they want to be that person that does it for somebody else. So you see on the bottom
Look inside the ספר in the pages if you have it. Who's the בית אברהם, חבר'ה?
You resurrect the dead through your מאמר, through your speech.
You could literally resurrect the dead. אנשים שהם בבחינת מתים, על ידי אמרי פיו, based on the words that you say. I heard a famous ווארט from the קאצקער רבי. It is, it's a, it's a pretty amazing thing to do תחיית המתים on the dead.
It's a much more intense thing to do תחיית המתים on the לחיים, on the living, right? And all of us have this little שטיקל בחינה of מת inside of us. We're we're קאלישן for that just that one word that we've been waiting our whole lives to that to hear from somebody else. תחיית המתים on the living, that's a really serious, that's serious business. So if you look down right now, if you go down to to footnote פ"ח, look what he says over here.
Let's just talk about the most basic level. So the שבט מוסר is a very important ספר.
The שבט מוסר was in the, the 17th, 16th, the 17th century from the חכמים of איזמיר. I think his name was. And he has a ווארט like this. It's brought down in the ספר בני יששכר.
Someone that was נעבעך swallowed up by his own צרות. He says this happened to me when I met someone that was swallowed up in his own He was thinking of taking his life.
He opened up his heart to me. He told me what was going on and I showered him with דברי, words of appeasement and of consolation.
He told me the truth. He opened his heart and he told it to me.
He said to me, "Had I not met you, I would have taken my own life."Don't raise your hand, but did it ever, just putting it out there, I'm sure it ever happened to anyone here that they were told that by you saying something to someone at the right time, they ממש saved, ממש took took away from them that that ענין of חס ושלום taking their own life. Just, just by, just by listening to the person and and and saying a few words, a few words. It doesn't say what he said.
You know what happens to us quite often when someone comes and tells us how נבעך their life is, we think that the חכמה is to be a בעל עצה, to tell them how to fix their life. That's the עבודה. That's, that's quite often not the עבודה.
That'll דוקא drive someone to go and חס ושלום think of more ways to implement that that bad that bad מחשבה. Quite often when a person's breaking, they they don't need, most of the time they don't need at that moment all the עצות how to get their life together. They need one, like רב שלמה would say, just one, just one song, just one word, just one hug. Like that, that's all they need at that moment.
Words of appeasement and consolation. And if you are yourself are also worried, you're not in a good place, and I've seen this happen.
I mean, I'm sure you could all say the same thing, that when you found yourself in a שוואַך מצב and the last thing in the world you have is כח for someone else's פעקאלע. And then someone comes to you with their פעקאלעך, and then the gut reaction is, "You kidding me? No way. Not now." And דוקא they they they they שלעפּ out of you words that you need to hear that you're telling the other person. It's a very special thing.
I'm sure that's happened to a lot of people here. That's A.A. More basically, נכון.
שאף אם אין אדם יכול לעזור לשני ולסעוד אותו, what happens is a person can't really help the other person and get his act together, ואפילו אם אין בכוחו לדבר עמו דברים המסייעים על הלב. And you know what? You don't have that וואָרט they need to hear at that moment. You don't have words that'll sit on their heart.
Nonetheless, listen to them. Just, just make the person feel heard.
The person gets saved and is encouraged just by that. כשמרגיש שיש אחד שמבין מצוקתו, that this person comes out with a feeling of saying, "There's one person that can relate and understand a little bit to my crisis." There's one person that can understand my crisis.
That's also a big מעלה. That's also a big מעלה. Quite often people come, they they they קרעכץ it all out, and you start to, you you stop listening because you're already preparing what the וואָרט that you're going to say is. You stop listening, the שמיעה stopped.
All they need to see is that there's someone that hears what's going on, just that there's a space for for what they're going through. And he says this falls under the category of מחיה מתים. So first we said Now we would add and we would say
That's a, that's a very important חכמה as well. Back in the footnote that you have, Have any, have we spoken about him before? I have his ספרים in the other room.
He was either a ראש ישיבה, a big משפיע in גער, in גער. Judah loves him. He used to say he went to the, he went to the שואה ונורא. used to share a lot of just מעשים that were very מעורר, מסליב.
So he says like this, שבשנות ראינו רוב בשואה נוראה, what we saw in the Holocaust, הוליכו אותנו הרשעים מהכא להכא, מהלך ימים רבים. Those death walks, those tormentous walks that they made people go through in the Holocaust. We've heard we've heard so many of these stories.
They couldn't keep on going with the walk, with the march. The guy would, the woman, whoever it is, would get shot. He felt that he was on the end his, the end's with.
And the the רצון to be alive was was fading away. He wasn't gonna continue running. והתיישב על הארץ and he sat down on the ground.
Keep on going. Somehow with these words he blew within him new life and gave him a רצון to keep on running. ובכך ניצל ממות לחיים, and he was saved from death to life.
והיה אומר רב גדל שכל התורה שלמד לאחר המלחמה, all the Torah he learned after the war, וכל זכויותיו בהעמדת תלמידים, all the students that he brought to become, you know, יראי שמים, הכל נזקף לזכותו של האי גברא שאמר לו שתי תיבות אלו בלבד והחיה אותו בדבריו. He was, it's an amazing thing. He credited, and and there were hundreds, if not thousands of students that he later was מעמיד in עם ישראל. But he never forgot that there was moment in life that he decided, I'm done.
And then someone come and said two words to him and he credited all the learning that happened afterwards. And who knows how many houses in עם ישראל these boys then, you know, created and how many children they have. And it was all in the זכות of מחיה מתים במאמרו of two words that a ייד told him while the Nazi was about to shoot him. Two words.
Sometimes it's all it is. Sometimes that's all it is. Okay, so back the page before.
Now we have a an explanation based on the מהרא"ל, whose יארצייט was yesterday. And in the גמרא in בבא בתרא, כל הנותן פרוטה לעני מתברך בשש ברכות. Whoever gives a פרוטה, any any any money to an עני, he's blessed with six ברכות.
But if you come and you and you appease and you console an עני with words, you merit to receive eleven ברכות, eleven blessings. Now we can understand it. Why? שהן הפרוטה תכלה במשך הזמן, that money will will go away eventually when it's used.
That's the difference. Money, you'll help, I'm not saying don't help, חלילה, but when you help, make sure it's מלווה with something that never goes away.
The money is going to go away. My friends and I had a certain, there was a, we, there was a certain venue we used to go to in in, how many חברה here from California, from Los Angeles in the room? Nobody, huh? So there was a certain place in in Venice. Anyone been to Venice Beach? Anyone been to Venice Beach on a Sunday afternoon? ויודע, that's when you understand the meaning of the words ויבין כל יצור כי אתה יצרתו. Every, there's every יצור that השם ever had in the בריאה is there on a Sunday afternoon in Venice Beach on the boardwalk over there by, right?
Things you, today, you know, I'm talking like 25 years ago. Today, I can't even imagine in America of 2025 the דרגות of יצורים that that that that exists. Back then it was already wild, wild, wild. Jerry, what's the, where what's the equivalent of that in Chicago? Is there a location like that? משה אריה, is there like a, סקוקי ישיבה, no, I'm kidding, kidding.
Central Park, I don't know, but in LA, in there, it was really, really wild. And there was always these חברה, these guys that basically decided they're setting up shop at death's door. כל ימי חייהם in the parking lot. That wasn't like a just for the show.
That's where they, that's where their מציאות was, right? But obviously money would run out very, very, very fast if there was anything, right? So they'd come, they'd give a whole דרשה about whatever, about what they need, and we would and they and they would say, this is for this, this is for that. My friends who I would just say, brother, לחיים. Just do what you got to do, right? Give him a buck or give him, give him a, whatever the money was. That was so clear that at that moment, yeah, you're helping them for a second.
You are. And it's a מצוה. You're helping them for, you're helping them for a second. Now some would say it's not a מצוה if they go and buy a beer with it or if they go and buy, you know.
Right, I'm, I'm כף זכות. No no no, with a dollar what are they going to get? I mean that one dollar and another dollar. The beers when they're on the wagon. Right.
It's a מצוה because you might prevent them from stealing something. No, that I heard that once. That actually could be. That actually could be.
That actually could be. You're מונע גנבה, at least you מונע a bit more possibility of גנבה. Yeah, it's true. But whatever you're going to give them, at that moment, would be nothing.
Do you know, you cry thinking about this. Do you know how many homeless שלעפּערס showed up to רב שלמה's funeral at the קרליבך שול in New York? On a rainy, rainy Sunday morning in October. I have, there's videos, I have the video of the funeral. The funeral itself.
You have the חבר'ה that loved him from like from, from, from like Morristown and, and Crown like, and you, you had people there. You had people there that he was מפרסם בדברים and he was מפרסם בשמיעה. And he was מחיה מתים. We don't even know how many people.
We don't know how many people, but anyone, any homeless person that lived in the vicinity of, if you know Upper West side, 79th Street, Riverside, West End, that whole area, they were all touched, and I could give עדות for this because on רב שלמה's second or third יארצייט, I don't remember which one, I was walking home, I was walking to where I was staying from the, from the קרליבך שול up Broadway and someone came up to me, a homeless Black brother came up to me, he's like, you're one of שלמה's? You're one of שלמה's, right? They were like saying, like גילוי אליהו, it's like saying, like reminding me, you're one of שלמה's. What does that mean you're one of שלמה's? That that that you actually, you're gonna give me something, but you're also going to be מפרסם בשמיעה. What a legacy, what a world, what a, what a,
And who knows, there are עדות of other people that said, because he actually listened to them, that was enough for them to get their, their acts together and and snap out of certain things that they were stuck in. Okay, back on top over here.
This is the greatest level of צדקה, to מפרסם someone with words, with, with with acknowledgement. וכבר איתא בגמרא, it's brought down in the גמרא in כתובות, טוב המלבין שיניים לחברו יותר ממשקהו חלב. It's a, it's a beautiful line in the גמרא. What does that mean? It's better, what's that? It's better, what does it, what does it mean Well hopefully your שיניים are לבן.
Depends on your toothbrushing but It's better to, to show teeth to smile to a person, that's what the גמרא says, טוב המלבין שיניים לחברו יותר ממשקהו חלב more than giving the person milk. מה מה מה מה קשר, like I understand the smile, but the דיוק here is on the ענין of חלב, okay? Of milk.
Why doesn't it say water and why didn't it say that it's more precious than wine, which is obviously more precious than than milk? אלא שמעלה מיוחדת יש בו בחלב, שמלבד שהוא מרווה הצימאון, besides the ענין that it satiates, מרווה את הצימאון, it satiates, הרי הוא גם מזין ומשביע הרעב, it satiates thirst, הרי הוא גם מזין ומשביע הרעב. It also satiates hunger, not just thirst. Water doesn't do that, wine doesn't, you're still hungry after other משקים. But somehow the ענין which is a baby is already tuned into this from birth, the ענין of חלב is that it's משביע.
have both thirst and hunger. Yes, אביחי. Interesting to note that חלב is the beginning of our life. You're giving this guy all the physical life he can get with milk.
This is like how you sustain life. But that still doesn't, physical life doesn't cut it for everybody. אור החיים interprets that to mean you have to make the other guy smile.
It's not about you smile to the guy, you have to make him smile.Okay, I won't look yet. Nothing to do with him. Thank you. בזהו שאמרו, second to bottom line on the top, יותר ממשקה הוא חלב, שייטיב עמו בדברי חיזוק ועידוד המזינים את נפשו.
Because that's greater. That שמיעה, that דיבור, that פיוס is greater than this, than that which satiates a person physically both both through רעב וצמא. Because as much as milk may make a person on a גשמי level feel like they could, they could stand up again, a few words, two words, two words.
And on this, this is what they said, this is what they meant when they said So just one more thing I wanted you to see. Look at פ' ט'.
We skipped it but look at פ' ט'. I love, I love that just when you think you've heard every single וורט on a certain רש"י, and then you hear another angle. It's just the greatest thing because how many וורטים have we heard in פרשת בהעלותך, ויעש כן אהרן. So what does רש"י say over there? להגיד שבחו מלמד, להגיד שבחו של אהרן מלמד שלא שינה.
How many וורטים have we heard on this about, what are you telling us that שכוחך אהרן הכהן, you did what you were supposed to do. And חסידות is is filled, it's blowing up with all these different תורות explaining to us what רש"י was saying about אהרן הכהן. So he says, יש שהמליצו בדברי רש"י להגיד שבחו של אהרן. אמור לחברך דברי שבח וריצוי.
Say to your friend words of praise and appeasement when? Even when it doesn't look like he's worthy of it or he deserves it, because he hasn't, You don't see the person changed at all or anything like that. And yet still, say words of, like אהרן הכהן would come to a person and tell them how much they're shining sometimes based on this, even if there was, you know, maybe, maybe אהרן הכהן could see something, but on the צורה level, there was no difference between who the person was yesterday and today.
This is the מוסר וורט. לא שינה here doesn't mean that he became a better person.
לא שינה would mean that his life fell apart and he was became now a different מציאות because he broke. Don't wait till someone falls apart to help him and to be with them. And that's, I shared this Wednesday night, Wednesday night.
I did something for this חבר'ה. I was with Naftali, his brother, and their חבר'ה in, had an evening in in the old city. The are good friends from from רעננה. And I'm sure it's שייך to them too, but I shared with them how proud I was to live in a קהילה that some חבר'ה come to me a few times a year and they don't wait until someone says they're in dire need.
They have a חשש that maybe someone's suffering financially, and they say, שלמה, go go and check to see if that person's about to plummet. Not if they plummeted, go check and see if if it already, if if they're on their, if it seems maybe there possibly could be a שינוי צורה and will give me an envelope to give them. I'm telling you, that is, you I'll be very honest, in this gig you hear things you you never wished, never wish you heard, find out about people. And then sometimes you you experience things that you can't believe that exist in in today of of such a, of a of a person that comes to you and says, make sure that person doesn't have a שינוי צורה, we're going to go go and check.
Go and check before. That's that's just an amazing thing. It's a humbling thing to witness. It's a humbling thing to see.
Back inside in פ"ט. אל תמתין שישב על רכבו לגמרי, עד שכבר יכירו זה עליו. Don't wait until this person that that basically this person will have such a שינוי צורה that everyone will see, God, this guy is, this guy is toast. This guy is toast.
Listen to these words. This is amazing.
Listen, we want, we always want to feel like Superman. We want to feel like heroes, like we saved someone's life. What feels more געשמאק? Helping someone that is ממש על הקרשים, like that means like, you know, done, or preventing someone from reaching that place.
So what feels more געשמאק? Let's admit it. When he's dead. When he's dead. When he's done.
When there's a שינוי צורה. He says the real אמת'דיקע appears and the highest level of צדקה you could do is by דברי פיוסים before that person gets there. How did he טייטש this whole thing up? Let's try to try to understand this על פי רש"י. ויעש כן אהרן, להגיד מלמד להגיד שבחו של אהרן, מלמד שלא שינה.
It teaches us that he didn't wait, לא שינה, he didn't go to the people that only had a שינוי that you saw in them, their toast. He went to them. He was that person that comes to the רב and says, before you plummet, here, take this. And that's even on a higher level of צדקה.
That's a higher level of צדקה. And now אות צדיק, footnote צדיק, it's a great day for footnotes. אות צדיק on the bottom. Huh? And אלול, of course, בטח.
Now I have to verify if this person that he's quoting is who I'm thinking of, I think it is. Maybe some of you will remember. I mean there's been so much footage that we've seen in our lives that has messed us up.
They don't, it doesn't even mess us up anymore because we're so immune to it. But it used to be when I was a kid, living, you know, glued to to to TVs and things like that, censorship was so strong, you never ever saw vio- real violence and definitely never saw death. You know, you never saw death on screens, ever. Social media comes and the whole thing is פרוץ, you can't help it.
So we've seen it. Anyone that saw it, and I hope you didn't, but anyone that did see, the most gruesome, gruesome footage that we probably've seen in in in a long time or maybe if ever this past week on Wednesday night. But these the footage of פיגועים have it's like circulates more and more, the crazy stuff. One of them, I'm just bringing it up for for a certain point here because we're gonna learn something from someone that is שייך to this.
Liron's first cousin, the footage of Liron Kopinsky's first cousin, her life being taken on the כביש that goes from basically אלון שבות to צומת הגוש. Remember her name? Dalia. Dalia Lemkus from תקוע. There's there's certain things that stay with you forever, forever.
There was a יד'לה in מאה שערים and גאולה, I don't know if you remember this, a car ramming, that this guy, the car went into him. Do you remember this, guys? I think even more. Huh? I think he survived actually. He went flying.
I know. I know he was in the air. The air is what I I remember the I remember the air. Like I remember...
I remember Lemkus ממש every time I drive past that spot. Every time. It's ממש, like the guy ran her over, and then, and then... Every time.
You can't make this up. You can't. Every time. But so in that one, and what we're speaking about right now, that person, there were two people that flew up in the air.
One shockingly made it, one died from his wounds. And I think, because the name, and I was looking, I think this is who it is. I think that was...
Where's Eli Goldman? You were probably living in that area then. Is that, do you remember this name? It's one of these חבר'ה that that we saw him being taken up בשערה השמימה by by uh, by by קליפת עמלק/ישמעאל.
He goes back to this ווארט from the גמרא in כתובות, כי החלב אינו ניתן לשתיה בכל עת. You can't drink, it's, it's milk is not, unless you're, unless you're a vegetarian, but, but milk is not always available to you. Why?
חלב can only work in certain situations where it fits, where we could actually take in חלב. But and it's obviously, it's a nice Jewish on this piece from the from the גמרא in כתובות. But really for us, what what do we take from this is that, you know, every time Reb Shlomo began speaking, he started off by saying, everybody knows.
And every time he finished speaking, he would always say, you never know. So which one is it? So we really דרש this a few years ago. The ווארט is that everybody knows that בעצם you never know. So what don't you ever know? You never know when this may completely, completely set someone's life on a completely different track and מעמיד דורות הרבה like that צדיק told us that happened to him in the Death March.
You just don't know. Yeah, Emmanuel. I was also thinking that uh milk spoils as you're talking about water and why other those other things will will last.
Milk milk's going to spoil and a smile won't. More than that, I would say that it's for the person themself that's smiling. What do you mean? When the person themselves is smiling at someone else, they're they're doing a bigger טובה for themselves, giving themselves חיות I I find. Yeah.
That you're you're walking away with more than than milk's going to last. Yeah, נכון. Yes, Yosef.
I had a זכות uh about a week and a half ago, two weeks ago, to meet uh Einav Danino. Ori's mother? Ori's mother. She came to, she donated like a a תפילין stand and a pair of תפילין that we gave to a local army base. She said Ori's big thing is no one left behind.
Not talking about soldiers. The guy sitting on the bench that needs a smile. Whatever it may be. That's so when I hear this, I just I think immediately of that, of what she what she was saying and how it's just so important, especially now, with everything that's going on to just make sure that we're always giving that smile, saying hello, saying good morning, and that can make the biggest difference in the world.
Yeah, Yehoshua. One thing that for for a while now, I know I learned it but but I try to do at least you know there's people coming asking for money or whatever.
Oftentimes I don't have cash, whatever it is, at least to smile at them. Just to like, yeah and smile. 100%. You can't give money to everybody.
100%. smile.
He's been here, listen. Our brother's been here many times on Fridays. He's never come in and sit down for for a שמועס. 'Cause he's he's got a lot to do and people and he doesn't understand half the stuff we're saying.
Obviously he does, 'cause 'cause he's sharing all this right now. So in in בזכותך, אנחנו, כל אחד מאיתנו, כשהערב אנחנו נגיד את המילים האלו במגן אבות בדברו, מחיה מתים במאמרו, אנחנו נתכוון, we're going to have כוונה that we should two things. That if חלילה we need that person to be מאמין שיניים to us, השם will send that person at the right time. We'll see, we'll see it.
But even greater, that we could that we could that we should be that person. There's so many לימודים from what we just did right now. Don't wait till the don't wait till a שינוי צורה. There's there's like 15 different things we could take but just for now, to find that person when we ממש need it, even before we ממש need it.
And ב', to be that person for someone else is would be an amazing, amazing זכות for all of us בעזרת השם. Take that with us to.
